Can a computer Identify Carious Lesions in Dental X-Rays as Accurately as Human?

To test the diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence (AI) in dental radiography, an AI system and three experienced dentist were each asked to identify the presence or absence pt tooth decay in a large set of oral radiographs.

Key Findings:

• AI was superior to dentists at predicting the existence of decay
• AI was diagnostically consistent
• Diagnostic inconsistency between the dentists was high
• All three dentists rarely reached consensus that decay is present
